After a very busy week, I am happy to present a new listing on my store. It's a simple pair of earrings--one in my line of Berries. Since I have been on a bit of a water-kick*, I decided to name them RiverBerries.
The story:
The rivers in the Landus Fantasticus are as many and varied as its people. The stately River Therr that divides the Enchanted Forest from the Haunted Forest is wide and deep, its waters blue and almost as dark as the sea. The River Xelland in the High Mountains is clear and cold, fed by melting ice.
Yet neither is the case for the River Aiwen, nestled close to the Marshlands, whose swirling waters are bright turquoise. Why these waters are colored that way surely has a scientific explanation—yet the locals like to think of it as a symbol of their unique land. They claim that this River is blessed; its water makes their harvest bountiful and prosperous. In addition, they say that the waters color the little berries that grow on the banks; these RiverBerries are the same bright hue as the Aiwen. For this reason, the berries are highly prized—a representation of the River itself, and the bounty it brings.
These earrings, made with bright turquoise crackled glass, are reminiscent of both of this river and the little berries that the locals so highly prize. Whimsical and bright, they can serve as reminders of blessings—even those as simple and profound as water.

* - So, what do I mean by a water-kick? Be warned: it's nerdy. It's also probably pedantic. If you don't want to be regaled with scientific geekiness, you probably shouldn't read on.
Recently, I have been amazed at water. Honestly, the simple combination of one Oxygen atom and two Hydrogen atoms has created something so incredibly vital to life. It's a tiny molecule--I think one of the smallest--and yet it is so, so necessary.
Water is something that many people take for granted--myself included. Yet we need it for pretty much everything--for drinking, for cooking, for making plants grow, for cleaning ourselves and our clothes. Where there is no water, we cannot exist. (Perhaps some extremophile bacteria can, but as far as humans go, we are water-dependent.)
When scientists look for life on other planets, what do they look for? Water. (Incidentally, water can also be beautiful--did you know that Saturn's rings are made of ice?)
Why am I thinking about water so much? Well, living in a house that gets its water from a cistern has really made this clear to me. For this reason, when it rains, I get really excited--it means that there is more water. More water for showers and laundry and drinking--just more water. (And also, watching television documentaries on the Solar System doesn't really help, either--they tend to go on about space ice.) Every once and awhile, simple things seem profound, and they completely blow my mind.
Water is pretty amazing stuff.
